The Passing of the Flame

Tom Cruise

There is some good news and bad news about the recent lists of the hottest men in Hollywood. The good – they are always changing. The bad – they are always changing. The reasons for this are largely unknown, but there seems to be no end to it.

Gone are the days when the Hollywood hunks were a standard faire for decades, if not a generation. They were The Dependables, actors such as Steve McQueen, Burt Lancaster, and Errol Flynn. Stop and take a look at the longevity of Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro. Hardly hunky any more but there are still more than a few people who continue to pay to see their new movies.

Who’s Your Hunk?

Perhaps the reason is that the attraction is more about their acting talent and less about their looks or money. OK. Just kidding. But maybe with the exception of Tom Cruise has there been an enduring male actor who not only continues to make movies, but also remains a hunk.

Feel free to blame the Internet for this. People have so many Hollywood, Bollywood, and Independent stars to choose from it is hard to stick with one year after year. Even if you have a wildly devoted following and are talked about regularly in social media (hello Tatum Channing!) next year’s adoration is iffy at best.

 “The Vending Machine Quandary”

We can call it “The Vending Machine Quandary.” When you stand in front of a vending machine there are so many choices that you can never really decide what your number one choice is. Even if it is available, the fact that there are other choices causes you to pause – and perhaps change your mind.

Besides, the actual characteristics of a hunk will vary from year to year. Some may “look” hunky while others “are” hunky. So where do your place your “X” to vote?
